What outcome do you hope for? I was on a call for the last hour talking with a friend about supporting a vision he has.

At the end of the call, he asked "what are you hoping to get out of this?"

I found the question really hard to answer in a way that makes any sense at all.

My answer to the questions comes in feelings, images, and body sensations. I see a bowl overflowing, I feel a magnetic pull, I experience a sense of duty, I follow synchronicities, I release and this is what came to me. One of my purposes in this life is to bring people together, especially really smart people. I don't have a goal, and if I did, I am sure it would change. I want to be of service to a vision of the best future possible.

I'm after the experience. My vision will fill out along the way.

When I can't frame the answer in an intelligible way, it causes doubt- maybe this isn't right? Maybe my intuition would have a clearer answer if this were the right path. Maybe I'm cutoff from what outcomes I hope for and need to work on getting more in touch with my desires. Am I too scared to name a desired outcome for fear of being letdown if it doesn't come true?

But I want to try on that the question may just be the wrong question for me. Or that my answer to the question isn't going to sound like what I've heard from other people.

Sharing here, and open to others experience of answering this question. How do you know what you want?

And if you know me, happy to hear your perspective on my specific psychology or what you think is going on 🤔

AMA with Tim Urban. Wednesday, 3/4 at 2:00 PM CT

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJqtVCgxXTE

Post questions you're curious about here, and continuously during the conversation. One orienting big question: How do you keep thinking clearly when everything around you rewards thinking tribally — and can technology actually help, or does it only make it worse?

Tim Urban is the writer behind Wait But Why, one of the most popular blogs on the internet, known for making complex topics (AI, procrastination, the Fermi Paradox, the future of humanity) accessible and deeply engaging. His book "What's Our Problem?" examines how the decline in collective thinking quality threatens democratic society. He's currently deep in a new long-form writing project exploring the full arc of everything.

I'm really excited about this! Tim is one of my favorite thinkers and authors, and a fantastic communicator. I'll do my best to be on tomorrow!

Hot take: states should STEAL crypto from insecure custodians operating inside their own borders. $2 billion in crypto was stolen by North Korea in 2025.

Lax security isn’t a private failure.  It’s a national security risk. Every poorly protected exchange or bridge becomes low-hanging fruit for foreign adversaries, ransomware gangs, and sanctioned states.

If assets are going to be stolen anyway, better they’re stolen by the state than permanently lost to hostile actors.

This would function as a security tax.

Some fraction of the proceeds will be used to fund development of more sophisticated hacking techniques.

Some can go into a sovereign wealth fund.

The rest can return to the source wallet after the victims have proven they have tightened their security.

Invest properly in custody, or pay for failure

    Incentives become immediate, not theoretical

Foreign attackers are denied easy access

We already ground unsafe aircraft and shut down non-compliant banks. Crypto shouldn’t get a free pass just because the theft is digital.

UpTrust is both destroying my interest in other social media platforms and improving the way I interact with them.

It became blatant to me this week when I realized my screen time limits had long since stopped popping up for social media. I would open an app, look at up to 5 things, feel an "ugh," and go do something else.

More and more in conversations I've been saying, "I just wrote a post about that on UpTrust!" an more and more the reply is, "How can I get on it??"

I've never much been tempted to share and/or elaborate on my opinions anywhere on the internet. But I have been interested in posting them here, and my reason keeps being that it feels like the algorithm has my back. After I post an opinion here, the likelihood that something generative and worthwhile will happen feels way higher here. Even when I imagine a bunch of buttholes joining.

Earlier today, something happened that I totally had not forseen. I replied to a Facebook post I was tagged in that I've been annoyed by and avoiding for months. And I replied the way I'd reply here- thoroughly, thoughtfully, with a belief that it could be worth my time and energy. I think UpTrust is giving me a lot of practice at typing what matters to me in this kind of format, and my increased skill is getting paid forward to other parts of life.

PS- I keep wanting to type "algorhythm" because of my music background, but anyway it's an amazing name for a math rock band.

Can someone actually have any Teal if they score 0% Orange, Amber, Red, and Magenta? Going through the scores of the Better Political Conversations quiz is fascinating. (reference: https://www.guidedtrack.com/programs/we0q1pq/run)

Now, this very well could have been someone running an experiment to test the scoring, or to try to get a sense of a friend or family member, but they did give a name where a lot of people leave that blank.

    Their scores are:
    Teal 55%
    Green 45%
    Orange 0%
    Amber 0%
    Red 0%
    Magenta 0%

Is it at all possible that someone could select every single response at Orange, Amber, Red, and Magenta as False, wrong, or just doesn’t make sense and have any actual Teal?

Also interesting, I got an email from someone who thinks of himself as primarily Orange, but was surprised that his quiz results came out 0% Orange. He referenced his Meyers-Briggs results as a reference in support. Utterly fascinated, I’ve asked him to let me know what correlation he sees between the Integral levels and Meyers-Briggs, and I’ve asked him what statements at Orange would have had his quiz results come out accurate for him.

Each time I make a significant edit in the content of the project I make a note of the change in the google sheet where I’m keeping track of scores. Here are the averages of the currently 75 scores:

    Amber 26%
    Green 25%
    Teal 21%
    Red 12%
    Orange 11%
    Magenta 5%

One blatant pattern I’m seeing is that high Green scores ALWAYS pair with a high score in Amber, and that people who have that pairing always score exceedingly low in Red and quite low in Orange.

Dates with an uber-green guy... Tonight is my second date with a guy who’s the head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Austin school district. I enjoy him a lot, but EVERYTHING is identity for him. I brought up integral theory on our first date and he’s super interested. But I find myself surprisingly awkward feeling like I need to side-step all the sacred cows of his worldview. But so far anytime I’ve pushed back on it he has lit up, so maybe I can just chill the eff out.

Who should date me? I get really pumped about what can be possible for online dating in UpTrust.

For example, someone having high current trust scores from a majority of his exes.

Or me going through all my single friends who are the gender I date and posting on their Dating Recommendations tree posts like I adore him as a friend and would totally want to date him if we wanted the same lifestyle! He gives the best hugs and is someone whose opinion I value highly when I make major decisions. I’d like to see him with a woman who embraces spirituality and likes throwing Superbowl parties.

So here’s my personal test-drive. Feel free to populate this tree with your opinions on my dating life, recommendations, questions, etc. <3

Attempted Trump Assasination- Was he actually hit by a bullet? (meta commentary: I imagine the future of uptrust will host more conversations of this nature… so let’s see how we navigate it)

On Saturday, former president Donald Trump was the target of an attempted assassination.

Two things I want to talk about–

    1. Was Trump actually hit by a bullet? I’m skeptical that a bullet grazed his ear, and think it’s more likely that a piece of shrapnel clipped him. I’m not intending to minimize the fact that someone definitely tried to kill him, but rather I am irritated by his spinning and inflation of the story if there is a truer thing to be said about what happened.

    2. The secret service really fucked up. How on earth do they miss a lone sniper on a roof that many of the bystanders identified before them? I don’t think there is a conspiracy theory here, but do believe someone should probably be fired for their oversight.

I’d like to hear others’ opinions on this + where your credibility comes from. Name your news source or experience that leads you to believe what you’re sharing.

    jordanSA•...
@val you changed my mind, I checked out a slo-mo video and I can’t really tell much, but since I didn’t have strong convictions in the first place, I’ve updated to think he did get grazed and yeah he’s a lucky...
